When Kat Von D Talks, You Listen.

Saturday, April 28th, 2012

Most of us wanted them at one point, their unique designs, the meaning behind each artistic detail, and words that have meaning attracts all kind of people. Usually we all have different perspectives on them and many people get tattoos or want tattoos for different reasons. Among the most common two are, tattoos are more than just permanent ink, they are artistic expressions that show each individual. On the other hand, some people misinterpret those who have them, they see them as gang symbols, and a means for kids to show their rebelliousness. Kat Von D, a well known tattoo artist, recently wrote a book, High Voltage which was all about tattoos, her personal ones, and her experiences. Now she is opening her own tattoo shop in L.A called High Voltage Tattoo. As you may have known her from the TV shows Miami and L.A ink, she does amazing work and is favored by many. Recently, she was on the show Rachel Ray, this episode was about parents not letting their kids get tattoos. Three sisters ages 16 to 21 wanted to get approval from their parents but they viewed it as a permanent decision and not a good choice. The girls wanted Kat Von D’s help on persuading their parents to consider getting it done. Kat explains that the first step is to decide if it is truly the right thing for you. “We are constantly trying to talk people out of getting tattoos sometimes because they really rush into it or are doing it for the wrong reasons. It’s something that people notice right off the bat so you’ve got to make sure that you’re stable with your career and stuff.” The next step is making sure you find the right tattoo artist, and not a random shop that you and your friends will find. Kat suggests that you shop around for the artist and can not stress the importance of this enough. “I think a lot of people make the common mistake of just going to any random tattoo shop,” she says. “You really have to seek out your artist because there’s a lot of great talent out there but they might not get your idea or your vision.” And when it comes to tattoo placement, Kat has some very picky thoughts on this one. “You don’t want to just stick stuff on like stickers. Once you have one, be extra careful to use sun block. The sun is like the worst enemy for your tattoo. It will fade your tattoo double time as much as would if you just put sun block on it.” And if you ultimately regret your tattoo, you can reverse the decision with laser removal, but it’s not an easy fix. “It is just very painful,” Kat says. “The process is long; you have to go repeated amounts of time. It’s not fun.” Whether your thinking about getting a tattoo or not, they are represented by who you are. This may well be the most unique and personal experience of your life. If you are thinking about getting one and want to know even more about tattoos or ideas, check out Kat Von D’s new book!

Kobe’s Life in Ink

Friday, April 6th, 2012

While NBA stars are no strangers to tattoos, as one of the most popular men on the court, Kobe Bryant’s tattoos are of particular interest.  You might think that at least one of his tats would have to do with the sport that has made him a legend and given him the life he has today; wrong.  All of Kobe’s tattoos have to do with his life, family, and beliefs.  While some may call it bittersweet, others claim that Kobe’s tattoos are just his way of making up for his mistakes.  Whatever you may think of his tattoos, they aren’t going anywhere so you may as well find out the stories behind the ink.

Choosing the Right?

First off, we just have to state how strange we think it is that the only place Kobe has got any of his tattoos is on his right arm.  That’s right; he has no tattoos anywhere else (that we know of) except that arm.  Why?  We wonder if there was a reason behind this or if he just felt the need to keep the ink in check.

Whatever his reasons, the sentimental value of his tattoos really is quite sweet, no matter what you think of Kobe as an athlete (or a person). So let’s start at the top of his arm and move down, shall we?

Kobe’s Queen

Kobe’s right shoulder has a large crown across it; if you look closely, you can see that the center of the crown is actually a butterfly.  One might wonder why a man who tries so hard to be the badass macho man all the time would permanently ink himself with a butterfly.  Worry not; it’s all about the wifey.  Underneath it is the name of his wife (possible soon to be ex wife) Vanessa.  Her name is displayed in beautiful script just below the crown and big enough for the world to see at first glance.

As if that’s not all sweet enough (or enough to trigger your gag reflexes), underneath Vanessa’s name is a crown and then a large picture that, at first glance, is really hard to put a label on.  Is it some sort of tribal design?  Wings?  Nope; it’s Vanessa’s hair with a halo over it.  Whether that is totally sweet or completely strange is an opinion we’ll leave up to you.

Inspiration

Underneath the lovely artwork of his wife’s cascading, halo-crowned hair is “Psalm XXVII.”  For those who don’t happen to have the book of Psalms memorized or have a Bible handy, it is the Psalm that reads, “The Lord is my light and my salvation.”

The Ladies

Once you’ve scrolled down Kobe’s rather muscular bicep past the crown, wife’s name, hair, and the Psalm, you might think that there couldn’t possibly be room for anything else.  However, on Kobe’s wrist, in perfect script are the names of his two daughters: Natalia and Gianna.  All of the leading ladies in Kobe’s life have their place on his tatted up arm.

Is it just us or do Kobe’s tattoo choices make you wonder if maybe there is a genuine man underneath the egotistical athlete Kobe is always made out to be?

Celebrity Tattoos – Lindsay Lohan

Monday, October 31st, 2011

Troubled teen star and jail bird Lindsay Lohan has a handful of tattoos – all of which (surprisingly!) she got inked whilst out of jail.  Her latest tattoo is from the lyrics of Billy Joel’s classic ‘I Go to Extremes’ on her ribcage.  Reading “clear as a crystal, sharp as a knife, I feel like I’m in the prime of my life” we can only wonder whether Lindsay is living by the lyrics or on the verge of yet another break down.  One thing is for sure, Lohan and Joel will be together forever now, whether he likes it or not.

Another significant inking was unveiled back in 2008 when Lindsay and then girlfriend Samantha Ronson, got matching tattoos to signify their relationship.  Like most celebrity relationships, this ended up going sour, and Samantha Ronson has recently announced plans to cover her tattoo up with a skull and crossbones design to remove the reminders of their romance – there’s nothing like going a step too far in the celebrity world.

Celebrity twin inks seem to be all the rage nowadays though, and even Lilly Allen got in on the action back in 2009 when she visited an LA ink parlour with Lohan at 2am in the morning.  Both women emerged with the scribble ‘shhh’ inked on their index fingers.  Although they may have found it hilariously funny at that time in the morning, it’s hardly original… especially as Rihanna beat them both to it!  It was clearly a moment of madness, and we wonder whether Miss Lilly regrets it now or not.

Other tattoos on Miss Lohan’s body include a small heart between the index finger and thumb on her right hand, a small red star between the index finger and thumb on her left hand, a black outlined star on her wrist, and “la bella vita” on her lower back with the ironic meaning ‘life is beautiful’.  Apparently it was inspired by her late grandmother though, so this is somewhat forgivable.

Of course we should also mention the tattoo on her right wrist which says “breathe”.  Thought to be inspired by a John Lennon quote, Lindsay then did herself no favours by admitting that she needed reminding to breathe… because it’s quite easy to forget you know?  Seriously!  Luckily for her, it is hard to notice unless you are very close to her, which is unlikely unless you end up in a jail cell for rich kids.

As well as permanent inkings, Lohan has also sported a number of henna tattoos at points during her career.  These are a much safer method and thankfully easy to forget about.  She has mentioned a few times in the media that she loves tattoos so much that she will probably start her own tattoo parlour up at some point if she can find a partner or an investor to join her.  Whether she will or not remains to be seen, quite like her life in general really.

Foxy Tattoos

Monday, October 24th, 2011

If there’s one celeb whose tattoos we’ve all wondered about, it’s Megan Fox. From her “Love the Way You Lie,” music video to her Armani commercial, it’s clear that this girl is sporting quite a bit of ink. Megan Fox is one celebrity who, while believing that her body is a canvas, has managed to make her many tattoos seem classy, sophisticated, and sexy rather than grungy and overdone.

Philosophy and Shakespeare

Fox has two quotations on her body that she’s taken from literary geniuses. While she’s changed the words a little bit to fit what she wanted, the quotations still retain the same meaning. On her right shoulder blade, fox has the words, “We will all laugh at gilded butterflies.” This quotation is taken from Act 5, Scene 3 of Shakespeare’s well-known tragedy, King Lear. On her right ribcage, Fox had a quotation from German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche inked in big bold letters. The quotation reads, “And those who were seen dancing were thought to be insane by those who could not hear the music.”

Something More Personal

On her left ribcage, Megan Fox has the words to a “poem” of sorts that she wrote herself. Judging from the tattoos already mentioned above, it’s clear that Fox is a lover of words, so it only makes sense that she included some of her own on her canvas. In large old English letters, the text reads, “There once was a little girl who never knew love until a boy broke her HEART.” While it’s not known what inspired the tattoo, suffice it to say that Fox may be more than just a pretty face.

Another personal piece of text that Fox added to her canvas is the tattoo, “Brian,” on her right hip. After a 6 year on again off again relationship with Brian Austin Green, Fox finally married him (and made his name a permanent part of her anatomy) in 2010.

Happy Birthday, Mr. President

Perhaps her most popular tattoo (probably owing to the fact that it’s the one most easily seen) is the image of Marilyn Monroe inside Fox’s right forearm. Fox was once quoted as saying that she believed she had some sort of connection with Monroe. She felt they had similarities as a sex symbol and she also stated that she often felt that she would die young like Monroe did.

She is now having this tattoo removed; saying that she feels it’s now a negative symbol. Since Marilyn Monroe suffered from personality disorders as well as bipolar depression, Fox stated that she doesn’t want to attract such negative energy into her life.

Symbols and Such

Once you’ve taken in all of the large text and the Marilyn image, Megan Fox still has quite a few tats going on. On the inside of her right leg, just above her ankle, Fox has a tattoo of a crescent moon on top of a five-pointed star. The significance of this tattoo is that it is one of the only actually colored tattoos that she has.

While Fox’s right arm is sporting Miss Monroe, her left wrist is adorned with a tribal tattoo. The image is of two waves that are in the shape of yin and yang. This tattoo has a tiny bit of color but from a distance just appears black like all of her others.

Red Hot Tattoos on Anthony Kiedis

Tuesday, August 2nd, 2011

Being the lead vocalist of one of the biggest rock bands in the country, Anthony Kiedis has body art that most of his fans like to copy. Kiedis was born on 1st November 1962 and grew up in Grand Rapids Michigan, but moved to Hollywood at the age of eight to live with his father. Kiedis went to UCLA for a while but dropped out due to substance abuse and it was at this time that he received an offer to join the Red Hot Chilli Peppers as lead vocalist.

Although Anthony has a large number of tattoos, he doesn’t have loads of ink as most of his tattoos are in black and white. Because Anthony has a Native American background some of his ink is of Native American Tribal design. His collection of tribal tattoos has grown over the years and they now cover most of his back and arms. There is no doubt that the popularity of his tats is helped by the fact that his designs are mostly black ink and they are also quite bold and distinctive.
Anthony has a very impressive design of a Haida Thunderbird on his back, the design of which is said to come from the tribes of the Pacific Northwest and it is styled on an Eagle. It is said the art was inked by Henk Schiffmacher in Amsterdam in the early days, as the Red Hot Chilli Peppers hung out there a lot of the time.

In the early 1990’s Anthony had each of his upper arms inked in portraits of Native American chiefs. One is of Chief Joseph and the other of Sitting Bull and both of his large biceps have black work tribal armbands. When Anthony had these designs they were less common than they are today.

Anthony Kiedis also carries on his ink down his arms and he has a pair of tribal style daggers on each of his forearms. These incorporate patterns and Celtic line work that runs from his elbow down to his wrists. Although these tattoos are similar to each other they are not in fact identical.
